The Gordon Castle plum was bred in the walled garden of Gordon Castle in Fochabers, Moray, the ancestral home of the Gordon clan. This plum was bred by John Webster who was Head Gardener at the walled gardens for Gordon Castle and first recorded in 1864.
The plum is large, oval, with pink, yellow skin and rich sweet flesh. The plums are still used to produce the ‘Gordon Castle’ Plum Gin. The trees, trained against the walls of the walled garden are estimated to be between 100 and 150 years old, and still producing fruit. With the very kind help of the gardening team at Gordon Castle I was able to produce my painting using these wonderful old trees.
