The ‘Bloody Ploughman’ Apple was bred at Carse of Gowrie. It was first recorded in 1883. The apple’s name comes from a story of a ploughman who was shot by a gamekeeper for stealing apples. His wife threw the apples on a compost heap, and the ‘Bloody Ploughman’ grew from the seeds.

The apple is large, and red with a knobbly appearance around the base. The flesh often has some pink staining.
