Turnip ‘Purple Top Milan’ originated in Italy, the name deriving from Milan in northern Italy. It is mentioned in Vilmorin – Andreux’s Les Plantes Potageres from 1890. This was written by the family that owned a major French Seed Company at the time which included detailed line drawings of hundreds of vegetables.
The turnip is small 10-12 cms in diameter growing to 30cms high and is slow to bolt. It has a smooth skin and is sweet and tender with round flattened roots with purple collars. It can be eaten both cooked and grated raw in salads. In France it is known as De Milan a Collet Rose turnip.
