I was attracted to grow the ‘Scotland Yellow’ heirloom tomato by its beautiful golden-yellow coloured fruit and because it was reported to thrive in cloudy conditions and be cool weather tolerant. The indescribable, but wonderful, smell of the volatile compounds from the stems and leaves was also something to look forward to.

It’s an indeterminate, self-pollinating salad tomato with regular leaves, grown on a single stem with large fruit trusses at regular intervals.

The seeds germinated easily and quickly grew into large, sturdy plants some of which I grew on in the greenhouse, and others outside. As they grew, the fruit changed from a green-blue to green, yellow and the ripest, surprisingly, a dark orange. Their size was about 2-3oz, about the size of a golf ball. Best of all, the fruit tasted sweet, remained firm when fully ripe and kept well off the vine. One vigorous tomato plant was brought indoors to be the plant to paint, with tomatoes harvested from the plants outdoors.
