This cabbage is thought to have originated in France with a long history going back to the 19C. Through natural selection and traditional breeding methods it has developed good cold tolerance, and is well suited to cooler climates.

It has been cultivated in the UK since 1867. It is a cross between a savoy and a green cabbage and has very crinkly leaves, the outer leaves turn vibrant purple and pink during winter. The small heads weigh between 3-5lbs. It is known in France as Chou de Milan de Pointoise.
